5 Ways to Survive a Winter in Rochester

Whether you're from Rochester or Los Angeles, Anchorage or Miami, it's important to know that the winter weather in Rochester is not to be feared. There are so many opportunities to embrace the cold and enjoy the snow!

  1. Winterfest weekend: One of my favorite campus traditions. This weekend is full of activities both indoors and outdoors, free to all students. Outside, there is hot chocolate, s'more-making stations, sled dogs to play with, and horse-drawn carriage rides along the Genesee River. Indoors, you can "Build-A-Bear," make glass etchings, take a picture to make a snow globe, and enjoy the candy bar.

  2. See a movie in Hoyt Auditorium: Sponsored by UR Cinema, students can enjoy new releases on the "big screen" in an auditorium on campus. Tickets are only $2 and there are snacks and refreshments for sale. You can see the movie listings on the Cinema Group website.

  3. Starbucks: A great way to cozy up, listen to live music on the weekends, and drink a salted caramel hot chocolate with your friends.

  4. Go to a basketball game:  Both our men's and women's varsity basketball teams play frequently inside our Goergen Athletic Center. There are often free giveaways and appearances by our pep band at the games. Our athletics schedules can be found on the UR Athletics website.

  5. Take a weekend skiing trip at Bristol Mountain: Less than 40 minutes away from campus, it's a getaway frequently enjoyed by our students. Find out more on the Bristol Mountain website.
