Why I Love Mornings!

Don’t you just love that feeling of waking up early in the morning ready to do homework and get your day started briskly?

…You don’t??

Okay, maybe that’s just me. But today I want to share this feeling with you!

For almost two semesters already, I have been waking up at 6:30 a.m. every day, regardless of the hour I go to bed. It has become a routine, and a matter of discipline in my life. To be quite honest, it’s one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made. My productivity in the mornings is far superior than at any other time of the day. Three hours in the early morning are much more valuable to me than three hours at night in terms of studying, getting homework done, and being well focused.

Some days, I go to the gym (located in the Goergen Athletic Center) as soon as I get out of bed (I’ve even had to wait outside for a few minutes sometimes for the gym to open at 6:30!). Surprisingly, there are always quite a few early birds just like myself working out at that hour. There is no greater feeling than to be freshly showered after a great workout, having breakfast at 7:45 a.m., ready to face anything the day may throw at you.

This year I became a Resident Advisor in Lovejoy 2, and I am proud to say that my residents are truly outstanding individuals. I decided to challenge them, to get out of their comfort zone and to try something new. I organized a 6:30 a.m. Hall Workout, and surprisingly, ten of my residents woke up, put on their best face and joined me in my crazy morning endeavor.  Most of them even enjoyed it!

This all comes down to trying out different routines until you find the one that best fits your lifestyle and allows you to perform to the best of your ability in all your endeavors, whether they are sports, academics, theatre, music, or any others. In any case, I would encourage giving early mornings a try! Do it for a day, a week, a month! You might find yourself performing better in classes, having more time, feeling more energized and with more time in your hands!

In any case, the ever-sought “balance” is nothing but smoke and mirrors. There is no “balance”! It is in your hands to define your lifestyle such that you grow in academics, as a person, and you are truly happy in the process. Here are more ways to get healthy in college.

If you wake up early enough these snowy days, you might catch one of these gorgeous snowy/sunny mornings!
