Choosing a college felt like one of the biggest decisions I’d ever made. I didn’t have everything figured out, not my major, not my long‑term plan, not even what kind of campus I wanted. But I did know one thing: I wanted a place where I could grow, explore, and actually feel like I belonged. That’s what led me to the University of Rochester.
From Singapore to Rochester
I went to high school in Singapore, in a city that’s always moving, bright lights, busy streets, something happening every second. I loved that energy, so I knew I didn’t want to end up somewhere too quiet or isolated. URochester felt like the perfect middle ground: a campus with its own community, but still close to a real city with food, culture, and things to do. It felt like a place where I could have both space and connection.
Financial Aid That Made a Difference
College is expensive, and financial aid was a huge part of my decision. URochester offered a package that made attending possible for me. It wasn’t just about affordability, it made me feel like the school genuinely wanted me here and believed in what I could bring to the community.
Finding a Community That Felt Like Home
I’m originally from Zambia, and then I lived in Singapore, two places with completely different cultures. I wanted a university where I wouldn’t feel out of place, where people were welcoming and open. Even before I arrived, I could sense that URochester had that kind of environment. And once I got here, it was real. People hold doors open. They smile at you on the quad. They ask how your day is going and actually wait for the answer. As a first‑year, that made settling in so much easier.
Four Seasons, Something I Missed
One of the things I didn’t expect to matter so much was the weather. Growing up in Zambia, we have real seasons, and I missed that in Singapore. I wanted to experience fall leaves, winter snow, spring sunshine, and warm summer days again. URochester definitely delivered. The first snowfall felt magical, and spring on the quad is something everyone looks forward to after a long winter.
The Flexible Curriculum I Needed
I had no idea what major I wanted when I applied. I was curious about data science, computer science, maybe even something totally different. URochester’s flexible curriculum was a huge reason I chose this school. No strict general education requirements. No being forced into classes that didn’t interest me. It gave me the freedom to explore without pressure and that freedom helped me start figuring out what I actually enjoy.
Looking Back, I’m Glad I Chose URochester
Now that I’m here, I can see why this was the right choice for me.
URochester gave me:
- A community where I feel like I belong
- A campus close to a city, but still peaceful
- Four seasons that make the year feel alive
- Financial support that made college possible
- The flexibility to explore my interests at my own pace
It’s not just a university, it’s a place that’s helping me grow into the person I want to become.
