Who am I?

Hello! Very nice to meet you. My name is Kevin; I’m a transfer junior here at Rochester studying entrepreneurship and creative writing. It’s my first semester and so far, so good. I guess can do a little better than that. UR has been amazing! I’m absolutely thrilled to be here. Every day, it seems, is a journey towards finding something greater within myself and others.

Technically, my educational trajectory is considered non-traditional. I’m 26, and thus older than the average junior student. But that’s okay; non-traditionalism is the key to entrepreneurship! (Or so they say…).

Kevstory Lesson

After high school, I moved out to Southern California and studied music business at the Musician’s Institute of Hollywood. The experience was great, and it launched me into a life of active engagements: musical projects, small business ventures, marriage (personally, my favorite engagement). After a few years in the field, I reentered college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business.

Small business has always been a love of mine; I idealize it and pretend it’s a modern art form. Maybe someday I’ll stumble across an art-gallery filled with gutsy business plans; who’s to say? In the near future, however, I do hope to start my own successful company and eventually help and empower others to do the same.

Creative writing is another love of mine. I’ve been blogging at TheNumberKevin.com for a couple years now—discussion topics cover a little bit of everything—and I enjoy the short story format for fiction. When I am not reading business books or writing blogs, you’ll find me worshipping a good cup of coffee at a local cafe, playing Weezer covers on my Martin acoustic guitar, or taking a walk through the park with my lovely wife.

Y UR?

Most business schools I researched left little room for the arts. (A shame!) I was looking for a school that would allow me to be me, a place where my writing could flourish and my entrepreneurial experience would deepen, a place where the arts were held with an esteemed yet intrinsic value.

(UR enters stage left).

At UR, students fashion their own majors if they wish. Not bad for a top private university! We are encouraged to be ourselves, but also to grow through academia and embrace new experiences; we are taught to expect, explore, and excite the unexpected.

So here I am. Happy as a West Coast clam on the east, pairing my entrepreneurship major alongside a killer creative writing minor. At 26, “better late than never” is applicable but an untrustworthy phrase; at UR, I believe I landed right on time.
