The Key Steps of “Getting Recruited”

As I have given more and more campus tours, I have realized that a ton of prospective students want to know what exactly they should do to get recruited and play soccer at Rochester. It is a really easy process and there are a few key points I'd like to highlight for anyone who has a desire to play soccer here.

  • Start early.
The number one thing I would recommend is starting the process early. Many people who ask about this are already seniors in high school. You can start the process as early as your sophomore year in high school.

  • Come to camp.
This is undoubtedly the second most important part of the process. Coming to camp gives you a chance to put your skills on display in front of our entire coaching staff for four to five days. This allows you to give the coaches a clear idea of the player that you are. This is a lot better than just hoping they see you at a tournament or some other event because of the added exposure of the multi-day camp. The vast majority of players who come to play here attend camp at some point, and it is an indispensable aspect of the recruiting process. This also ties in to the first point because it is great if you can attend camp multiple years and really let the coaching staff get to know you as a person and a player.

  • Get in contact with the coach.
Getting in contact with any of our head or assistant coaches is essential to the process. As mentioned in the first point, the sooner you start, the better. Our coaches are extremely easy to contact. You should discuss with them your intent to play at the University, and try to see if they will be attending any tournaments or events that you will be playing at.

  • Keep your grades HIGH.
It makes our coach's life a thousand times easier if you can get into the University completely on your own. If you don't have the ability to get into Rochester, there is no way to play for us. We are student athletes, and the student aspect is emphasized. It is very hard for our coaches to even try to recruit someone who seems as if they won't get accepted.

Ultimately, you just need to keep trying to play at the highest possible level and start your process early. If you make sure you follow these key steps, you will have the best possible chance of getting recruited to play at Rochester.
