Summer Jobs

Happy summer, all! Classes have been over for about a month now… finals are over and you've finally got some free time on your hands! Now here’s the million dollar question: how are you gonna fill all those free hours you've got now? Long walks on the beach? Coffee dates? Lavish dinners with your closest friends? Well, I have a suggestion for you…

Do I sound like your mother? Your father? Sorry ‘bout that. But for college students, a good summer job makes a whole lot of sense! Let me give you the top five reasons you should be seeking a summer job right now (I’ll keep it quick, so you can go hunt for jobs as soon as you finish reading this!):

  1. Earn some cash. Number one reason to get a job: to earn money. You might be thinking Well, duh. Yes, it may seem obvious, but getting a job to earn yourself some money is a great idea. If you work 20 hours a week for the next three months, earning at least $8 an hour, you can make nearly $2,000 this summer! Just think how far that extra cash will go…
  2. Gain experience. This is a definite bonus. When I was in high school and college, I worked at Target. That gave me great customer service experience, and transferrable skills that help me in everything I do day-to-day. What can you take away from a summer job? Think about it—any job, no matter how mundane, has some inherent value!
  3. It's something to do. Has the thought I’m bored crossed your mind yet? As Betty Draper once famously said, “Only boring people are bored.” Get out of your house and get something to do! Get a job.

  1. Meet new people. It’s okay to admit it: you might be a little sick of the people around you. Your parents? Your siblings? Your friends from home? Getting a job allows you to branch out your friend circle a little more! My brother is a college student and is spending his summer doing landscaping work for a local golf course—and he’s met tons of new people! That’s half the fun of any job.
  2. Come back to college with money in hand! And so it comes back to money again. If you've worked all summer long, you’ll show up on campus in the fall with money for textbooks and more! It feels good not to have to ask your parents for money. A little self-sufficiency is a great thing.

Once you've arrived back on campus in the fall, then we can talk about student employment opportunities!!! Enjoy your summer vacation and good luck at work if you do choose to pursue a summer job. 🙂 You'll be sure to do Wallis Wallet and the rest of the Financial Aid team proud.
