Spring Break 2013: San Juan, Puerto Rico

As I’ve mentioned in my other posts, I decided to rush this past January and I'm pledging Sigma Phi Epsilon. In my rushing post and now, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you're interested in the Greek system to rush everywhere and find out where is the best fit for you. I definitely found that Sigma Phi Epsilon was the best fit for me and my decision is reaffirmed every day. It was especially apparent that I made the right choice when I was invited to go on their spring break trip with them.

After spending the past few months with a vitamin-D deficiency, I could not pass up the opportunity to head to sunny Puerto Rico with over twenty of my fraternity brothers and three other members of my pledge class. We ended up staying in a hotel that was a four-minute walk from one of the nicest beaches in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We would head over to a local diner to grab a bite to eat and then end up spending the entire day on the beach. Some of the other guys went on excursions, but I didn’t budget for them on this trip, and I was perfectly content just being a beach bum and soaking up the sun’s rays. I did end up with some hilariously random burns on the tops of my feet and behind my knees. However, the rest of my body stayed just as pale as it probably would’ve been if I had never left Rochester.

I also ended up getting to practice my Spanish in Puerto Rico. Although, locals were reluctant to speak Spanish to me because many of them know English well and have trouble understanding my awful accent.

It was interesting to see how their culture moves at a much slower pace than ours is. If you go to a restaurant, expect to be there for more than an hour. The service in Puerto Rico is much slower than in the U.S. and it's clearly that way because they take their time and enjoy the company of those around them.

I know I mention this in most of my posts, but I want you to realize that you will be presented with a lot of fun opportunities at school. Many of these opportunities will cost money and you’re going to wish you hadn’t spent it on other things when spring break, Bonnaroo, etc. rolls around and all of your college friends start planning trips.

Here’s a picture of some of my future brothers and me eating at a local Mexican restaurant:
