SigNu’s Hotdog Eating Contest: 2nd (4th) Place

One aspect of Greek life that is often overlooked is the dedication that many Greek organizations have to philanthropy. Since I started pledging at Sigma Phi Epsilon, I have become active in our philanthropic events as well as those of other groups. Sigma Phi Epsilon will be hosting the 19th Ward Spelling Bee in the 19th Ward neighborhood, where we have tutored young kids at Rochester area schools. We're also part of the Nick Tahou's Run, where you run two miles to Nick Tahou's, eat a garbage plate, and run two smiles back. However, these events are later in this semester and I just couldn't wait to start supporting Greek philanthropy.

This past Friday, I participated in the SigNu Hotdog Eating Contest, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event had a $5 registration fee and people were encouraged to donate money as well. We were split up into waves (to keep the fun going) and we had to eat two hotdogs with buns and then as many hotdogs without buns as we could in three minutes (water was provided).

I managed to eat six hotdogs and two buns in three minutes. Disgusting, I know. But that put me in a three-way tie for second place. At that point, I was pretty dehydrated and content with the three-way tie. However, there were additional hotdogs, so they had us face off in a sudden death, where the first person to eat three hotdogs won. That video can be viewed here (Please note that I was putting on a show and being ridiculous because of the nature of the event!).

Here are some of the best photos from the event as well. Shout-outs to Mac Liu, Heather Kase, and Gina DeMeo for supporting me in my conquest of hotdogs. Photo credit to Gina DeMeo for these beautious images:
