Rochester Gay Pride Weekend

Today's guest post is written by Serra Sevenler, Class of 2015.

The annual City of Rochester’s Gay Pride Weekend was held July 19–21 this year. Organized by the Genesee Valley Gay Alliance, the highlight of the weekend was the Pride Parade and Festival held on Saturday. Thousands came out to celebrate with the LGBT community. The incredibly diverse parade included floats with families, schools, nightclubs, politicians, and churches. These unique groups of Rochester came together for a weekend of unity.

The University of Rochester has been a large supporter of the LGBT community in Rochester for quite some time. In fact, a student group at UR, called the Gay Liberation Front, founded The Empty Closet in 1971. Today, The Empty Closet is thought to be the longest continually published LGBT newspaper in the world.
