Today's guest post in the New Major Blog Series comes from Venessa Simpson '14. Venessa writes about being on campus for the discovery of a new major and deciding it was the right fit for her.
After the Business Program was made during my freshmen year at the University of Rochester I knew it was something that I wanted to do. I initially came to the university as a prospective economics major but after taking a language in advertising course (something that was possible for me to take with Rochester's flexible curriculum) I saw myself getting more and interested in business and marketing. Luckily for me I had already taking some of the classes that are required for the major because they included some economics classes.
One of my favorite experiences with the Business Major has definitely been the small class sizes compared to other majors and the relationship it has with Simon Business School. I love that I get the opportunity to be taught by graduate professors while I am still an undergrad! My business classes have been my favorite classes taken at Rochester and I love that we are offered different focuses within the major (organizations and markets or marketing).
It's also nice to know that although our business program at the University of Rochester is small as it is for a purpose; Rochester is looking to enroll only the toughest, smartest business students and are capping the initial enrolling freshmen class of 2016 to 100 students. This is because the program wants to produce students with great quality and not quantity.
The business program offered at the University of Rochester was a great addition to our curriculum — I definitely recommend it if you're interested!
