New and unique majors that mix arts with engineering

Of the dozens of new majors launched at the University of Rochester in the last few years, one highlight is the popular new option in Audio and Music Engineering (AME) that began last semester. The major, even the concept, is so new that Rochester is the only place to offer it.

A collaborative brainchild of committed professors/musicians in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, AME blends the advantages of two great Rochester Schools (Hajim—Engineering and Eastman—Music). Designing the new major took years of development and discussion.

Offering 18 AME-specific courses in theory, research and practice, plus individual studios and portfolios, the new program is for the engineer or applied scientist who loves music and sound, or the committed sound artist who also wants technical knowledge and skills. Graduates will be ready to go into recording studios, but also acoustic design firms, professional engineering, even patent law offices.
