My Typical Weekend: A Student Play-By-Play

Every summer before school starts, I always see the incoming freshmen on their respective Facebook group asking what a typical weekend might be like at the University of Rochester. I thought what better way to share this than to just give a detailed weekend play-by-play. By that I mean that I simply recorded what I did from Friday at 3 p.m. to when I went to bed Sunday night, no fabrication. Hope you enjoy!

Wilson Commons

Friday: This Friday, I got out of class at 3 p.m., and by the end of the week, I’m exhausted between activities, classes, and labs. As soon as I finished class, I rushed over to Starbucks inside Wilson Commons and just unwound and hung out with friends until 5 p.m. After five, I grabbed a burrito from Zoca Mexican Grill and headed back to my suite (in upperclassman housing) and just watched TV as I ate my dinner! All very relaxing. Before I knew it, it was about nine, and my friend from the Bhangra team was having a small birthday get together at her house off campus. I got dressed and headed over to her house off campus and had fun just hanging out and eating cake.

Danforth Dining Center

Saturday: On Saturday, I catch up on any missed sleep I had during the week, so rather than waking up at my usual 8 a.m. for my 9 a.m. class, I woke up at eleven. Everyone needs to sleep in a little on the weekends! After, I went with my friend to get some brunch at Danforth Dining Hall, and then continued to just chat until one. After, I went back to my room, freshened up a bit, and then grabbed my backpack and headed over to the library until about six. Then Saturday night, a group of friends from my freshmen hall all decided to go out to dinner in Henrietta, a small town one over from Rochester, only about a ten-minute drive. We got dinner at Olive Garden, and went to then watch a movie at the theater. It was a reminiscent experience because it had been a while since I had seen my friends from my freshmen hall. It was great to catch up after so long.

Rush Rhees Library

Sunday: I knew I needed to finish my lab report on Sunday, so I decided to wake up at 9 a.m. and head straight to the library first thing. I cranked out my lab report, and then joined a friend for a tomato-mozzarella panini inside Starbucks. Afterwards, the two of us headed back to Rush Rhees library to get some additional reading done for upcoming lectures that week. At three, I and another friend of mine used his car to go back into Henrietta to get to Walmart where we grabbed some snacks. You can certainly get tons of snacks on campus at the various dining facilities and convenience shops, but I wanted some very specific stuff I knew Walmart carried. We picked up Taco Bell on the way home! Then I went back to my room, and just continued to work on papers and finish the rest of my readings for the week. I like to get ahead with my work!

Overall, the weekend was a lot of fun because I got to spend time with my friends outside of the classroom, and I also got a chance to get off campus for a bit and explore the city. I had a lot of school work, but I was able to get it done while balancing it with having fun! I’d say I had a pretty successful weekend!
