My First S’more

When I was preparing to embark on my trip to the United States – specifically Rochester – it was clear I was on the pathway to discovery.  Yes, discovery of: knowledge, myself and people in general. Little did I know that the discovery package includes the seemingly trivial aspects of the life of the average American kid.

Well, the night was approaching and it had been two days since my arrival at the River Campus. It was orientation week so, as you would expect, students were interacting; juniors were meeting freshmen, freshmen were meeting seniors, seniors were meeting sophomores and sophomores were meeting juniors. In short, everyone was interacting with new people while catching up with the old ones.

I headed back to my room and sat on my bed – somehow imagining how life was going to be like in the next 4 years. Suddenly, the door’s latch made an unlocking sound then : “Hi Oswald…..”, “Ozeeeeeeee……”  That  was my roommate, Conrad, and his friend Nick. They had just entered the room from wherever. They are both from Buffalo, New York and had made good friends upon their arrival.

Conrad sat on his bed while Nick stood by the wardrobe – like he still does these days.  “Man, I hear there is free  S’mores out in the quad” said Nick. “S’mores,” I said, “What are S’mores by the way?” Then with a surprise look on his face, Conrad answered my question with a question: “Os…………., you’ve never had  S’mores?” “I… I… em..no” I answered. He tried describing it but I guess he knew it would be more meaningful if I saw it for myself.“Well,” they both said, “you are going to have one today.”  Conrad dressed up and Nick rushed to his room to look for those biscuits used to make the S’mores.  Whether I liked it or not, I was going to get off that bed for the treat.

Soon, we were out in the quad.  Since Nick couldn’t find the biscuits, they pleaded to the crowd for a S’more – next thing you know, a cute young  lady accosted us. In her hands was what we were looking for.  I savored the treat to the very last bit and oh my….. It confirmed its name – S’mores; Some more.  Soon, the second and then the third S’more followed.

And I have Nick and Conrad to thank for this amazing treat. I loved it.
