Class Council: Call Me Maybe. Elect Me Definitely.

As I mentioned in my introduction post, I really wanted to get involved when I got to UR. I went to an informational meeting about Class Council, Hall Council, and the Student Association Senate, and decided to run for Class Council. Class Council plans events for your freshman year and really adds to student life by helping to bring the class together. You have to attend the meeting to run, so I won’t explain all of the details now, but I’ll tell you about CAMPAIGNING.

Running for Class Council was a blast! It was pretty competitive because there were eight positions open and 19 people running. There are many rules, and you cannot start until a certain day at midnight. However, at midnight, EVERYONE went and chalked up the sidewalks with their name and position, plastered posters everywhere, and one group even painted the rock outside of Sue B! After the opening day, it was honestly difficult to find places to hang up posters because all of the bulletin boards were absolutely filled with posters.

Everyone who was running for positions ended up walking around to tell people about who they were and what their platform was. The best part about soliciting for the election was that you got to meet a lot of people.

Quick protips:

  • Be active on Facebook before you get to school (Name recognition is key for freshman elections).
  • Chalk up hills, because it’s difficult to not look at the ground when you’re walking up the hill to Sue B.
  • Chalking outside Sue B is most effective because a ton of freshmen go to Danforth for dinner (because the food is the best).
  • Create awesome posters and run with your friends, because you’ll have a great time running, win or lose.

I had a lot of fun campaigning and I ended up getting the most votes of any of the people who ran for Class Council. So definitely read over my tips if you decide to run for a position here. I'll be posting more about my experience as a member of Class Council throughout the year.
