A Trip on the “Bee” Train

Dateline: Saturday, May 4, 10:40 p.m. at JFK Airport, New York City: “Now boarding rows 15 and higher…”

Thus began the beginning of the end of another spring travel season. For me, it’s that time of the year immediately after many weeks of meeting (or seeing again) hundreds of high school seniors on campus who have been admitted to Rochester and are making their final college selection.

A few days after the last 2017 Experience date, I was on a plane to NYC to meet high school juniors, sophomores, and even freshmen at a series of college fairs and various events all over New York City. It’s an interesting and exciting change for many of us in Admissions from speaking with students on the cusp of starting college to many students at the very beginning of theirs.

Having recruited in New York City for years now, one thing I have come to enjoy about spring travel season has been using some of the free time in between events to explore some parts of the city. This year, I made a trek up the B train (I love the NYC subway system . . . even the G and L trains that always seem to have some weird service changes) to the Museum of Natural History

Naturally, Rocky was in my bag and tagged along for the trip. Having not been in the museum in over ten years, I really enjoyed both old and new exhibits, and Rocky even had a chance to meet some “relatives” of his.

After our quick trip to the museum, it was back to the subway (dare I say we made a beeline to the "Bee" train?. . . Too punny?) and on to more college fairs all over NYC.

After nearly two weeks in NYC between my colleague Joe Latimer and myself, today was the end of the line. We'd met hundreds and hundreds of students and families, but after packing up my last college fair table at Brooklyn Tech High School (home of the largest elevators I have ever seen in a high school), my overstuffed bag was a clear sign it was time to get back to Rochester . . . where Sunday will be laundry day . . .
