As current URochester students went through the admissions process, we looked at several schools, but ultimately, the University of Rochester stood out to us in the end. Whether it was for the opportunities, such as the flexible curriculum or the research opportunities, or for the collaborative environment, every student has a reason for choosing the University of Rochester.
Let’s go around campus and find out why current students chose URochester!
First, we ran into Will!
Will:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: Connecticut
- Why He Chose URochester: “When I came onto campus, I liked the campus, specifically the environment of the school, and the location of being near Buffalo. I also thought it was a good distance from home.”
After a walk around Eastman Quad, Roshan was going into one of our three Libraries, the Physics, Optics, and Astronomy Library!
Roshan:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: New York
- Why He Chose URochester: “I love the research opportunities available. During my time at the University of Rochester, I have participated in research, and I have enjoyed my experiences.”
The University of Rochester is a Tier 1 research institution, which means just as many research opportunities there are at a larger University, we have them here but for a smaller population. Therefore, if you are interested in research, it is easy to get involved!
The University of Rochester is a Tier 1 research institution. URochester students students conduct research everywhere—in the lab and in the field, independently and with industry partners, in our local communities and all over the world. They are able to get involved easily and make real impact in their fields of study.

On their way to the Interfaith Chapel, we met Zoe and Morgan!
Zoe:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: Connecticut
- Why She Chose URochester: “While I knew I wanted to do more in policy science, I really chose Politics, Philosophy, and Economics as an option. Plus, I wanted research opportunities, and I like that Rochester has options that exist outside of just the STEM realm.”
Morgan:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: Pennsylvania
- Why She Chose URochester: I chose Rochester for lots of reasons. The psychology program was really good, and the campus was pretty. It had the extracurriculars I wanted, and the food was good. It is a prestigious school, and it has a flexible curriculum. I also liked how the campus population is diverse.
Since it was a nice day outside, we then saw Sanchit playing Spikeball on Eastman Quad!
Sanchit:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: New Delhi, India
- Why He Chose URochester: “I have an older brother, who attended the University of Rochester, and I loved hearing about his experiences here. So, when it was my turn to choose a school, I knew I wanted to go to the University of Rochester.”
Then, we ran into Hazel!
Hazel:
- Class: Senior (Class of 2027)
- From: California
- Why She Chose URochester: “I chose URochester because of its emphasis on flexibility in designing your own studies. The open curriculum is a true gift that has allowed me to incorporate classes of all disciplines while simultaneously pursuing my hobbies- it’s the best of both worlds!”
Now, it’s time to go to Wilson Commons (or as we call it for short WilCo)! When we were there we met Lily!
Lily:
- Class: Junior (Class of 2028)
- From: Minnesota
- Why She Chose URochester: “I chose the University of Rochester because they gave me the most in scholarships. It was also a good choice for me because I am on a pre-med track, so there are many opportunities here for pre-med students!
From opportunities to conduct Research at University of Rochester Medicine or volunteer at Strong Memorial Hospital, which has the only Trauma 1 center in the region, there are many opportunities to get involved with the medical field! Lily also volunteers in MERT, which is a student EMT group on campus!

On the way back to Genesee Hall, we saw Sam!
Sam:
- Class: Sophomore (Class of 2029)
- From: New York
- Why She Chose URochester: “I chose the University of Rochester because it was the only school in New York state to offer my favorite subject as a major (Epidemiology)!”
I chose the University of Rochester for two reasons: the community and the opportunities. When I came on campus, everyone was really nice and collaborative. I also liked the opportunities including, the flexible curriculum, research opportunities, and how easy it was to get involved with clubs. I’ve been able to explore areas I never knew I was interested in, have been able to get involved in two research labs, and all of the clubs I wanted to join. I’ve even been able to get leadership positions as early as my first-semester on campus! During my first semester, I was captain of my Mock Trial team, where I led my team through practices and tournaments. Since then, I have continued to seek leadership opportunities that have allowed me to improve skills like communication, collaboration, and problem-solving outside of the classroom, which are helpful skills throughout my daily life and after graduation. I have not felt that I had to be older in order to be involved on campus or make a difference on campus.
Just as everyone has their reason for choosing URochester, you will have yours!
