After three years of eating at dining halls and cooking on my own, I feel like I am somewhat qualified to do a food review of Rochester dining halls and other food places on campus. I think I am going to do a ranking system from my favorite to least favorite places to eat on Campus.
- Danforth Dining Hall
Starting strong, this is a Rochester favorite. I haven’t met a single person who hates the food at DFO. They have various options, including vegetarian, vegan, and halal meat. The menu is always so gourmet-style that you would be surprised to see certain items being served at a dining hall. Common DFO culture is the Saturday Brunch, it’s the perfect way to debrief the week and start a relaxing weekend ahead. I can’t explain how much I love the soft serve machine, it is the perfect sweet treat right after dinner. The only issue is the hill, limited time, and it’s a little far from the quad. But other than that, 10/10, highly recommend!
2. Douglass Dining Hall
In all honesty, Dug and DFO are a tie in my mind. Although the menu might be fancy at DFO, Dug’s time is unbeatable. I love the convenience and the freedom to eat dinner past 5 pm. And when Dug is serving good food, they go all out. I appreciate the commitment to making cultural food at Dug. There are so many different cuisines like Indian, Korean, Thai, and so much more. And no matter what they are serving, you can always count on the pasta station. Plus, Dug’s sweet treats are unbeatable!
3. California Rollin
This place is such a hidden gem and for good reason! I feel like you don’t really discover it unless you have class in Goergen or you are an upperclassman with thousands of declining dollars. The options for Sushi and Rice bowls are nowhere to be found on campus, so I definitely think this is such a unique spot. A little expensive in my opinion, so if you’re a freshman, this is definitely a treat. But if you have a lot of declining dollars, I definitely recommend trying this.
4. The Pit & Rocky’s
Uhh. I get it, it’s convenient and easy. But after a while, you get so tired of it. I can not even think about another beef and broccoli bowl or a wok bowl anymore. This is a buffet-style place with a lot of different options, such as burgers, subs, stir-fried noodles, and many more. I like the pit because of how late it’s open till. Sometimes I can’t make it to the dining halls, and being able to grab something from the pit is very convenient. It’s just that you get tired of the same food after a while. But still a very solid option!
5. Hillside Supermarket
Hillside is a go-to spot for convenient grocery shopping on campus. Whether you’re running low on snacks, need last-minute ingredients, or just want an easy meal after a long day, Hillside will have you covered. The pre-packed Wegmans meals are a total lifesaver for busy college students.
