Hi, my name is Melanie Earle and I am a new blogger for the University of Rochester blog! I am a member of the Class of 2023. I come from New York, New York. (Manhattan. I get asked a lot if it’s the city.) I am majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in political science. I reside in Genesee Hall.
Some things I am involved in on campus is the Campus Times newspaper, Baja SAE, and Society of Women Engineers. I am also involved in research. I am currently working on demos for the Pickel Lab.
My hobbies include reading, writing, drawing, muay thai, windsurfing, and tinkering with spare parts I find. I love comic books and science fiction. My favorite method of procrastination at the moment is to read any comic books I can find, and do it under the guise of research for my writing class.
My favorite way to relieve stress is to watch old episodes of Kim Possible, watch stand-up, draw, or work out. I enjoy long walks and it is common to find me, when I have time, taking the long route to places. I am always listening to music. It is a huge pet peeve of mine to not have headphones on me. I love listening to Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Samm Henshaw, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, and lo-fi beats.
My spirit snack is goldfish. It’s indisputable and my favorite ice breaker. I always use spirit snack as an ice breaker for name games. I can never decide on a favorite food when asked. I think I just enjoy good food and I like trying new foods. My favorite condiment though is Mike’s Hot Honey. It goes on everything. I love putting it on mac and cheese and ramen. I am concerned about my growing addiction to caffeine. Before the summer I rarely drank coffee and by the end of the summer I was having at least a cup a day or something involving espresso.
My favorite thing about Rochester is how I am able to explore humanities even as an engineer! I love writing and I did not want to sacrifice my love for the humanities due to engineering. Rochester allows me to have a breath of humanities so I can continue to learn what I love without leaving one behind.
That’s about it for me. Keep an eye out for my posts!
