The novelty of the new semester has worn off at this point. The snow is several inches deep, as are the assignments. Coffee consumption among the student population is steadily on the rise. The first wave of midterms are around the corner.
Fun times. Absolutely thrilling.
These times are so exciting, in fact, that the U of R students have turned to a new form of self expression: the meme (pronounced 'MEEM'). For those of you who are unfamiliar with the internet phenomenon that is the meme, I would advise you to look through 9gag.com until you get an idea of what memes are.
The University of Rochester memes are brilliant. These captioned pictures humorously summarize some of the things the students here love, hate, question, or have yet to understand about one of the top private universities in America. Here is a short compilation of some of my personal favourites:
Any student who has lived on the River campus can tell you about the cartel that is Hillside.
Hillside will sell you anything from frozen dinners to fresh vegetables to winter beanies.
Hillside will serve you with a smile and a "come back again" brown-nose line.
Hillside will serve you 24 hours of the day during the week and until AM on weekends.
Hillside will also charge you the equivalent of a full head of hair and a leg or two in prices.
This meme warms my soul with its spot-on accuracy.

Danforth Dining Center is the prime eating destination for a healthy percentage of the campus population.
With its recently renovated booths and somewhat predictable service, most students find that Danforth is 'where the food's at.'
However, many soon find that one does not simply walk into Danforth and get a table.
Such naivety will surely leave you eating on your feet.
The constant rush of students flocking to graze in Danforth means that easily securing a table [during peak times] is like solving a quadratic equation mentally. Improbable.

They lure you in.
The dance, theatre, and yoga courses are a world of fun, and fun only, they tell you.
Hours of dancing.
Eccentric instructors.
Great class to meet fun people.
You get to sit on the floor.
There are countless health benefits.
It's paradise on earth.
Oh—and just two or three four-page papers every week. Not a big deal at all.

If you have just been admitted to the University of Rochester or are thinking of applying, these memes should give you some playful insight into life here from the perspective of the students themselves.
You can view the other amazing UR memes on the Facebook page or the Tumblr site.
