Gear up for the Rochester Snow!

Spring Semester begins with a rather fierce winter! Temperatures around the low 20s are prevalent and snow is always ready to surprise the unsuspecting students in their morning walk to class. Although snowy days translate into gearing up with gloves, hats, scarves, and boots, it also means it's time for snowball fights, sledding, and snowman-building!

Here is a short video I took last week during the snowstorm!

Rochester is known for its cold weather, therefore the snow is a rather commonplace phenomenon here. Coming from a very warm country (to those who haven't read my bio, I am an international student from Panama) where the temperature averages between 80 – 100° F year-round, I have faced the coldest temperatures I've felt here at the U of R! I will confess, however, that the cold weather has been suprisingly enjoyable. I believe students in general are more productive and develop better study habits in a colder environment than in warmer latitudes. Especially for me, I feel more productive and ready to do work here in Rochester than back in Panama.

The snowy weather also opens up the doors to many different on and off campus activities. Skiing, ice-skating, sledding and snowcarving are only some of the most common activities students engage in during these winter months. The Bristol Ski Resort is a popular choice for skiing and snowboarding buffs less than 40 minutes away from the University. Genesee Valley Park, with 800 acres of riverside trails, beautiful clearings, an ice-rink and several sports fields, is a great location literally across the street from the river campus to enjoy a nice time with friends!

Not only are the outdoors activities great, but also the activities going on inside campus are extraordinary. The annual winter fair in Wilson Commons featured huskies, horse rides, and fire pits with free hot chocolate and s'mores. Far from being an impediment for activities, the snow leads to unforgettable experiences and fun times!
