Laundry for College Dummies!

I hate doing laundry! Yes, I will admit that my favorite thing about being at home is asking my mom to do my laundry for me. But not to worry, doing your own laundry is extremely easy. Here are some strategies I have for doing laundry at the University of Rochester.

  • Always make sure you ID card has enough money on it. Students pay for laundry machines by using Flex (money) on our ID cards that we have added to our accounts. A load of laundry costs $2.50, and use of dyers is free.
  • Pick a set date and time you will do laundry weekly or biweekly. This will keep it consistent and makes sure you do laundry regularly. I always do laundry on Tuesday nights, every other week.
  • Have dryer sheets available to you. This will make sure you clothes are not static-y when they come out of the dryer. Don’t forget to allot another 20 minutes for folding your clothes!
  • Set a time on your phone for when your laundry will be up. You really will not want to leave damp clothes in the laundry for too long—you want to quickly get it into the dryer so your clothes don’t go bad!

All in all, I’ve had a great experience doing my own laundry at the University of Rochester. There are plenty of laundry rooms in the various dorm buildings, always open and always working. The laundry rooms are also, believe it or not, a great place to socialize and run into your friends!
